QBM seeks to train a cohort of young scientists who, while firmly anchored in their home discipline, are well versed in multiple approaches and styles of thought. The goal is for the students to get comfortable in communicating across traditional boundaries, especially across the divide between experiment and quantitative theory – to become, in effect, scientifically bi- or multilingual. To this end, the school offers an integrated interdisciplinary Ph.D. program that consists of three main components:

An interdisciplinary research project which combines concepts and methods from different fields. A substantial program of formal course work with a general and an individual component centered around an interdisciplinary core course that covers key problems in bioscience from multiple perspectives. Further activities to enhance students’ other transferable skills to succeed in science as a competitive profession. ... [-]

Admission to the School of CMB

In addition to College of Engineering M.S. and Ph.D. requirements, the School of CMB has the following admission guidance and requirements:

Consideration is given particularly to the following components of the application: GRE and other test scores, undergraduate Grade Point Average, the student’s Statement of Purpose (SOP), and letters of recommendation. Quality students who have completed a B.S. degree in a non-engineering field such as Physics, Chemistry or Biology and who have completed mathematics through differential equations will be considered for admission to the School’s graduate program. These students typically are required to complete 3-4 additional engineering courses at the onset of their graduate education which will be determined by the School Curriculum Committee in coordination with the College Graduate Admissions and Advisory Committee. Change of major from M.S. to Ph.D.: a) each GRE score must be at least 150 (verbal and quantitative), b) Ph.D. entrance requirements must be met, c) adequate progress in the M.S. must be demonstrated, d) the undergrad GPA must be at least 3.0 (or its equivalent), and e) a compelling case for the change must be given. Biology, biotechnology, and biosciences have been rapidly developing since 2000. To handle the data produced, computer technology is required due to the excessive amount of data. Most of the recent techniques used in DNA, RNA and protein-based research is supported by bioinformatics and computer science. Computer science offers a new era for the biological sciences. For example the building block of the cell, proteins are modeled in 3D using a computer; this enables the rapid and efficient identification of molecular interactions and signals transduction pathways. Similarly, mutations in the genetic sequence can be detected quite fast using computer technology. Since the recent advancements in computational biology decreased the cost and accelerated the research processes including the drug development, the in silico studies are highly demanded in the industry....
